STAGE ONE CHILDREN’S THEATRE PARTNERS WITH KOSAIR CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
Posted: 2/5/2010

The winner of many national awards, this uproarious play about life, death, power and first boyfriends was adapted from the popular book, Good-bye, Best Friend. Hollywood-wannabe Star, the ultimate teenage Beatles fan, has been guaranteed a young death by cystic fibrosis. She spends most of her time in the hospital, where she confronts reality with her imagination. When Star’s new roommate Courtney arrives, Star judges her as a pretty cheerleader who apparently is not very sick. Neither girl knows much about the other's world, but eventually they come to understand each other, and ultimately, themselves. This is a powerful play about the power of friendship and living life to the fullest. A must see for any middle and high school student.

Says Director Andrew D. Harris, “One of the great things about a play like John Lennon & Me is the way it uses comedy to explore complicated emotional issues in a responsible and respectful way. More than a simple comedy, this play explores the world of thirteen year-old Stella “Star” Grubner. As Star enters into the already awkward and complicated teenage experience, her physical symptoms soon become overshadowed by emotional and social ones. It is difficult to grow up normal with the shadow of death hanging over you, and Star tries to live life to the fullest each and every day, but that is a hard philosophy for an adult to follow, let alone a teenager.”

John Lennon & Me features a talented cast of professional actors, as well as several student actors including Grace Theobald and Connor Holloway (YPAS), Cate Payne and Jahne Brown (Noe Middle), Shelbi Schooler (East Oldham Middle), and Jack Lindsey (St. Francis). Due to mature subject matter, John Lennon & Me is recommended for ages 10 and older.

John Lennon & Me will be onstage at the Kentucky Center, Bomhard Theater Friday, March 5 at 7 p.m.

To purchase tickets contact The Kentucky Center Box Office at 502.584.7777, 800.775.7777, 502.562.0730 (TTY), or online at www.KentuckyCenter.org. Tickets are $15.75, group discounts are also available. Audio Description, Caption Theater, and ASL Interpretation will be provided. Please make reservations when ordering tickets for the best seating options. Services are provided through outreach efforts from the Kentucky Center for the Arts. If you would like more information about accessible seating, assistive listening, Audio Description, Caption Theater, ASL or alternative format print materials before purchasing your tickets, please contact 502.498.2436. Program is subject to change.

Presented in partnership with Kosair Children’s Hospital.

KRT & PAC Announce Partnership
Posted: 4/10/2009

Following quickly on the heels of a successful fundraising campaign, Kentucky Repertory Theatre is pleased to announce a new partnership with the Hardin County Schools Performing Arts Center for the fall and winter season.

While continuing to maintain its home base and performances in Horse Cave, Kentucky Repertory Theatre will begin in September of 2009 to take a winter season of three productions to the Hardin County Schools Performing Arts Center as a part of both company's 2009-2010 seasons. The three productions, Dracula, Christmas Belles, and Macbeth, will each run for two weeks, including eight public performances and one performance for students.

Director of the PAC, Bart Lovins commented, "This partnership fortifies the PAC's reputation as Central Kentucky's quality performing arts venue and allows us to dedicate more funding to diverse, multicultural music and dance events."

Robert Brock, Artistic Director of KRT responds: "We are so excited to be performing in Hardin County and becoming a part of this dynamic community. We look forward to many memorable performances of great plays in the PAC's beautiful, state-of-the-art facility."

For 33 years, Kentucky Repertory Theatre (KRT) has produced award-winning professional productions in a rural setting. It serves as Kentucky's only Equity (fully-professional) theatre outside of Louisville. Designated as "The State Repertory Theatre of Kentucky" and the recent recipient of the Governor's Award in the Arts, KRT was also honored by USA Today as "...one of 10 great places to see the lights way off Broadway." KRT brings with it a long history of mounting great theatre classics and the best new works from George Bernard Shaw to Neil Simon and frequently including Shakespeare's plays. KRT also mounts an extensive education program reaching more than 15,000 students annually and a program that encourages new plays by or about Kentuckians.

ACTION NEEDED: Keep Arts in Schools

Keep Arts in Schools
HB 508 vs SB 1

From Arts Kentucky
Your source for arts advocacy, education and connections

Two education reform bills are making their way through the Kentucky legislature.  Senate Bill 1 was proposed first and passed the Senate easily.  However, the House is considering House Bill 508, which is much more friendly to the Arts and Humanities in our schools.

Please act now to support House Bill 508! Arts Kentucky and its education partners have reviewed these bills, and HB 508 is much more friendly to keep arts in our schools.  SB1 has much less language to ensure that principles and school decision-makers will be held accountable for arts and humanities programs.

The legislature will be making these decisions by Friday afternoon.  Please take action now!

You can learn more about each version of this legislation by clicking here for a great web page created by the Ky Music Educators Association (KMEA). Use the links on the top of their page for comparing legislation.

Our arts legislative policy is developed by the Arts Advocacy Roundtable, a group of statewide arts leaders convened by Arts Kentucky.  The group includes leaders of KMEA, the Ky Arts Educators Association, the Governor’s School for the Arts, and others.

Stage One presents A World Premiere
Posted: 1/13/2009

Brothers of a Common Country: A Story of Abraham Lincoln

As part of the Mimi and Marshal Heuser New Play Development Series, this world premiere is a compilation of biographical details of Lincoln’s life as well as a tableau of speeches, debates, and personal correspondence. Considered one of the most prolific writers to ever hold the presidency, this production will examine ideas of race, poverty, law and literacy from a man whose education was almost entirely self-taught. Stemming from nothing, Lincoln came to be an icon both politically and popularly, during the vehement and socially driven Civil War. Balancing political struggles with the lives of the people, the Lincoln project also recounts the time of slavery through the reflections of a slave child. Celebrate the life of Abraham Lincoln and the history under a nation divided: Saturday, January 31, 5 p.m. and Saturday, February 7, 5 p.m. at The Kentucky Center, Bomhard Theater.  Recommended for Ages 10 and up.

2007-2008 Governor Awards in the Arts Recipients

Owsley Brown II (Milner)
Recently retired chairman and chief executive officer of Brown-Forman Corporation, Owsley Brown has provided many years of charismatic leadership in corporate and personal support for a range of important Kentucky arts organizations, including Actors Theatre of Louisville, The Speed Art Museum, Kentucky Opera, Louisville Ballet and the Kentucky Center for the Arts. Brown has served on the boards of multiple arts organizations, led major capital campaigns in the arts, presided as chairman and president of the Greater Louisville Fund for the Arts, and is active in The Partnership for Creative Economies and the International Council of Trustees for the World Conference of Religions for Peace.

Suzan-Lori Parks (National)
The first African-American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Parks has published a novel, written numerous screenplays, garnered two Obie Awards, received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Rockefeller and Ford Foundations, and is a 2001 recipient of a MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Award. Parks was born in Fort Knox, Kentucky, and her plays have been produced locally at the University of Louisville and the Humana Festival of Actors Theatre of Louisville.

Vince DiMartino (Artist)
One of the nation’s most sought-after trumpet performers and educators, DiMartino is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, has taught at the University of Kentucky, been a Distinguished Artist in Residence at Centre College, served as Music Chair and is currently coordinator of the Centre College Instrumental Program, where he was recently named to the endowed chair of Matton Professor of Music. DiMartino has been the lead and solo trumpet in the bands of Lionel Hampton, Chuck Mangione and Clark Terry, has been a soloist with major national symphony orchestras, and is the co-founder of The Great American Band Festival in Danville, Kentucky.

John Timmons/ear X-tacy (Business)
Owner and founder of ear X-tacy retail store and records, John Timmons has produced numerous titles of over 30 Kentucky artists, performing a wide variety of musical styles. Timmons' efforts in providing an outlet for musicians to release original music are genuinely altruistic and a valuable professional-development service to the local arts community.

Kentucky Repertory Theatre (Community Arts)
Formerly Horse Cave Theatre, this nationally-recognized professional theatre is the only Equity, year-round, arts-producing organization in a large portion of south-central Kentucky. As Horse Cave’s largest employer, Kentucky Repertory Theatre develops and produces plays by Kentucky playwrights, provides theatre education for thousands of local students, and attracts significant tourist investment in a rural and underserved area of the state.

Julie Ann White (Education)
Thousands of students have benefited from the significant work Julie Ann White has done as the Owensboro Public School’s Fine and Performing Arts Specialist, including: assisting the state’s Department of Education revise Kentucky’s Basic Skills in the Arts Curriculum by coordinating the music, art, drama and dance K-12 programs; initiating an annual week-long Fine Arts Festival in cooperation with RiverPark Center; developing piano labs in all district schools; creating partnerships with local colleges and arts organizations to provide concerts and music education programs; managing a young-musicians summer institute, now in its 32nd year; and founding the Brescia Boys Choir and a number of other local choral groups. White is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Owensboro Public School Teacher of the Year, Kentucky Elementary Music Teacher of the Year and Owensboro Mayor’s Award for Excellence.

Cowan Community Action Group (Folk Heritage)
Through its annual summer Cowan Creek Mountain School, monthly square dances and an after-school program of mountain music and storytelling for children, this community-based organization has revitalized southeastern Kentucky’s folk traditions in one of the most remote and economically distressed communities in the state. The Cowan Community Action Group plays an important role in passing on Kentucky’s music to a new generation.

City of Covington (Government)
This northern Kentucky city has energetically implemented a series of economic development and historic preservation programs through the arts, including establishment of the Covington Arts District with an Artisan’s Enterprise Center, development of a Web site to link local artists and creative businesses, initiation of a national advertising campaign to market the Arts District and available properties, sponsorship of special low-interest homeowner and technology-zone loan programs, and management of the Arts and Cultural Strategic Plan to ensure effective coordination and support of cultural projects and programs.

Charlie Hughes (Media)
Charlie Hughes is founder of Wind Publications, which since 1993 has published books by award-winning Kentucky authors, including George Ella Lyons and Charles Semones. STAGE ONE, PART OF THE YUM! FAMILY SERIES PROGRAM, ANNOUNCES 2008-2009 SEASON;

INCLUDES BRAND NEW COMMISSION FOR THE LINCOLN BICENTENNIAL

Yum! Family Series Program and Stage One: The Louisville Children’s Theatre are excited to roll out the red carpet for the 2008-2009 season of theater for young audiences, complete with a few twists and turns…

Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse, directed by Matt Wallace, opens the season October 11-November 1 at The Kentucky Center, Bomhard Theater. Lilly is a spunky little mouse who loves everyone and everything, but when she does something for which she will be very sorry, she learns some hard lessons of patience and what it means to be selfish. The production is based on the popular children’s books by Eric Henkes and is sponsored by Brown-Forman.

Former Stage One artistic director and pioneer of children’s theater, Moses Goldberg, returns to Stage One as he directs Homer’s The Odyssey, October 25 at The Kentucky Center, Bomhard Theater. This classic epic revisits the style of Greek Theatre as it retells the story of Odysseus and his struggle to find home, ten years after the fall of Troy.

Returning by popular demand, the Herdman’s are back in town in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever at The Kentucky Center, Bomhard Theater November 29-December 20. These siblings are the worst kids in the whole history of the world, and now they have bullied their way into the church’s annual Christmas pageant. Experience the spirit of the season with this classic holiday production!

As Kentucky celebrates the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln this February, Stage One will showcase the world premiere, Brothers of a Common Country: A Story of Abraham Lincoln January 31-February 7 at the Kentucky Center, Bomhard Theater. As part of the Mimi and Marshall Heuser New Play Development Series, this production by Kentuckian Deborah Lynn Frockt will be directed by former Stage One Artistic Director J. Daniel Herring and is a compilation of speeches, debates, personal correspondence and biographical details surrounding President Lincoln under a nation divided.

The season continues with a remarkable story of Magical Realism as Stage One presents the Gabriel Garcia Marquez adapted short story, A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings (Un Señor Muy Viejo Con Unas Alas Enormes) February 28-March 7 at the Kentucky Center, Bomhard Theater. This Latin American musical folktale tells the story of two children as they discover a stranger who has fallen from the sky. Carrying on his back beautiful enormous wings, could he be an angel; is this a sign, a miracle? Only the story can tell…

Stage One has gone to the dogs (literally!) as they present the final show of the season, Go, Dog. Go!, based on the popular children’s book by P.D. Eastman. This romper room spectacle, sponsored by PNC Bank, explores the world around us through words, color, space and music; all hosted by man’s best friend! But the fun can’t last forever, Go, Dog. Go! will be onstage at the Kentucky Center, Bomhard Theater March 28-April 4.

Single tickets on sale now. To purchase tickets, or to get exact dates and times, visit www.StageOne.org, or call 502.584.7777, 800.775.7777, 502.562.0730 (TTY). Group discounts are also available.

Stage One is a member of the Greater Louisville Fund for the Arts, The Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency, supports Stage One with state tax dollars and federal funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that every great nation deserves great art. Stage One’s season is sponsored by YUM! Family Series Program.

Kentucky Arts Council Selects Artists for Arts Education Roster

FRANKFORT, KY — The Kentucky Arts Council has accepted five Kentucky artists for the agency's Arts Education Roster; a resource for teachers planning for an arts-enriched learning environment in Kentucky schools.

The professional artists made application with the intent of being resident artists in schools or communities in Kentucky.

Artists joining the Kentucky Arts Council's Arts Education Roster are: Cathya Beard, Dance, Lexington; Lora Benedict, Dance, Paintsville; Thomas Freese, Literary Arts, Louisville; Pamela Holcomb, Storytelling, Putney; and Jim McGee, Folk/Traditional Music, Louisville.

Acceptance onto the roster is based on artistic excellence, teaching and residency experience and the quality of proposed residencies, as judged by an independent panel of arts and education professionals by means of applications review and personal interviews.

The Arts Education Roster is also useful in identifying artists for community projects, youth-at-risk programs, early childhood education, special education and lifelong-learning programs. For a complete listing of the 57 artists currently on the Arts Education Roster, including contact information and sample residencies, go to http://artistdirectory.ky.gov/aer/.
